My post for 'Small Change' this month is a bit late due to all the excitement of holidays, birthdays and cake but that doesn't mean we haven't got started.
Inspired by my January change, reducing food miles and eating local, seasonal food, we have chosen to carry this through even further for April and our commitment is to put a lot of time and effort into our productive garden now with the hope of reducing those food miles to zero later in the year.
The weekend was spent planting seeds (some into the containers we get in our vegetable box - recycling and reusing too!),
and digging over the veg patch before planting spinach, peas, potatoes, onions and garlic into the beds. Tomato, cucumber, pepper, chili, courgette and squash have been started inside and various herbs have also been planted to compliment our veggie crops.
We are already fairly self-sufficient for fruit for the summer months (rhubarb, gooseberries, red currents, raspberries, loganberries, plums, cherries, pears, apples, figs, strawberries, grapes and now Jack's blueberries!) but I have also sown some alpine strawberries outside to add to the abundance.
This month sort of feels like light relief after last months challenge - hard physically but a little less taxing mentally! We can't wait to enjoy all that guilt free produce over the summer, now if only the chickens keep laying we will be set to survive whatever the world can throw at us....
...Ps. Just had to share a link to House on Hill Road for a Gardeners Hand scrub, perfect timing or what? I made some on saturday and it has had some good use this weekend, I definitely recommend it for those of you with green fingers and muddy hands at this time of year!
