A couple of weeks ago I had a particularly good visit to our local Charity shop (it was in February not March so I have nothing to confess regarding no spend month!) I managed to get a whole pile of lovely tablecloths and napkins in various jolly colours and an idea that had been brewing for a while was ready to progress to the making.
The result is what I have decided to call my Spring Picnic Quilt, a quilt full of spring colours and sunshine to wrap myself in as I knit and to capture all the joy of seasonal bulbs and being outside.
It is very loosely based around the idea of a log cabin patch but on a large scale, one patch making up the entire top. I have spent so long being scared of quilting because I don't know the correct terms or techniques. At Christmas I decided to jump in with both feet and do what I wanted without worrying if it was correct or what other people would think. The fact that the results made me so happy and were loved by the boys, has gifted me as much as them. I have set off in making this quilt with much more confidence and optimism, knowing that I can create something that I love and that that after all is the most important part of any project.
I have cut up and pieced together strips of each colour using the tablecloths and napkins I have been collecting ( I only have a need for so many table linens and I think I might have got a bit carried away!) and then joined them around a central square.
Once I have finished the top I plan to back it using a much loved duvet cover which has finally bitten the dust. I have some organic cotton batting left from making the boys quilts at Christmas, so there will be no outlay needed at any point. I haven't decided whether to hand or machine quilt it yet but I am just going with the flow and seeing what happens when I get to that point. You may notice that there are still some items hanging on the line that don't appear in my quilt, never fear they will all get used, another project is starting to come together and I will show you what I am doing as soon as it is on it's way!
