In July of last year my elder son , Jack, finished primary school. It felt like an enormous event in our lives as he went from the small, protective environment we were used to and took the next step towards independence and adulthood.
We felt such pride in this young man and in all he had achieved and we wanted to mark this time for him. The wonderful roots set down over the first ten years of his life and the new blossoming that would occur as he moved on to high school.
As an outward symbol of this growth we gave him a home made gift token to redeem for a tree of his choice. He has spent some time considering what he would like and over half term he declared that he had decided. We went off to our favourite plant centre and he is now the proud owner of two blueberry bushes. We have a half whiskey barrel ready to plant them in and he will tend them and enjoy their bounty much as we have tended him and enjoyed the results. Hopefully they will be as easy to love and care for as he has been. As generous with their fruit as Jack is with his smiles. May they prove as tough and determined in the face of hardship and setbacks . We look forward to seeing them all grow together.
