Yesterday, I mentioned in passing, that I wanted to make a small change that might make a big difference. That comment was prompted by reading about Hip Mountain Mama's, One Small Change Challenge here and here.
Anyone who knows me or who has regularly read this blog will probably be aware that the natural world and wildlife are very important to me. Seeing all the wonderful things around us and being part of that makes my life worthwhile. My daily walks, whatever the weather, feed my soul and I never fail to find something interesting or enthralling to lift my spirits and fill me with wonder.
Inspired by what I see, I am also very aware that I want to do what I can to protect this environment and because of this my family and I try and step as lightly as we can on this amazing planet of ours. I am always happy to try other ways of adjusting our lifestyle towards these ends and the Small Change challenge is one I am excited to try.
For my first months Change I want to develop a theme that started for us last year. I read Barbara Kingsolver's thought provoking book - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle last summer and was inspired to try and restrict the number of out of season fruit and vegetables from the other side of the planet we ate as a family. For this first month of January (what a month to start!), I am going to pledge to find a source of locally produced (organic?) vegetables and use only these or those I have managed to harvest and preserve from our own garden. I will keep you informed on how it goes - good or bad! - and I'll also be busy thinking up what I can do for the next three months in the run up to Earth Day (April 22nd 2010).
